As a gym, health and safety is important to ensure participants are protected as they exercise on the premises and use equipment in a secure manner. This is done through:
Risk assessments
Proper training for participants
Ensuring all coaches have the necessary qualifications and fitness training
First aiders
A Health and Safety policy: Health And Safety Policy
A coach is present throughout the sessions which are guided, and they will demonstrate how to use the equipment properly before the session starts. They will also be on hand to observe and assist, and will intervene if equipment is being used improperly.
A qualified first aider will always be on hand when equipment is being used and equipment is stored at the edge of the room to avoid tripping hazards. Before each session, the coach checks all of the equipment which will be used during the session and there are biannual gym kit reviews where volunteers oil barbells/tighten screws on benches and barbells and squat racks to ensure the equipment is in safe and working order. Any issues that arise with equipment should be promptly reported to the coach, and a decision may be made to remove the item from use until it can be reviewed.
When there is only a single person in attendance at a BCG session, solo use of the weight-lifting equipment is strictly prohibited.
All members receive a questionnaire before their first session asking if they have any health needs. Additionally, the coach asks if anyone has any injuries at the beginning of a session, and ensures that exercises are appropriate in avoiding worsening the injury.
We suggest that in order to keep the custom flooring in excellent working condition, people remove their outdoor shoes (to avoid traipsing in outside grime), and instead bring some other footwear to wear during classes. Jewellery or inappropriate clothing must be removed before training and participants are encouraged to bring water to the session, where you’ll be shown where to fill water bottles, and reminded to hydrate during and after the session.
To avoid unauthorised access, all participants must have booked onto the session prior to arrival to the centre, and to gain access there is an intercom system which the coaches will respond to to confirm identities of attendees. Workspaces within the gym are not shared, and as such gym members and attendees need to restrict their movement to the designated areas which include our gym spaces, toilets and the kitchen. Kitchen facilities are shared spaces and users are expected to clean up after themselves.
