There are essentially two types of facilitators. The first type are both first aid trained and have received the building induction. They therefore have the ability to open the gym up for Open Gym sessions (such as PB & Pizza), Workshops, Events, know what to do in the event of a fire and are first aid trained. The only restriction placed on them is that in keeping with our Health and Safety policy, there must be at least two people present at a session if they wish to use the equipment.
The second type of facilitator is one which has received only the building induction. The benefit of these facilitators is that they can be the facilitator for a Workshop, where an external guest coach is running a session providing the coach will have first aid training. It is worth noting we don't yet currently have any facilitators that are not first aid trained, but there is some discussion on Loomio on the benefit of having them and it is likely that this is something in BCG's future.
When facilitating a session/class or workshop, facilitators open the gym for attendees/members and read out the statement: Statement
When facilitating for a workshop or event, a facilitator has a responsibility to:
Be point of contact with the guest coach for all communications leading up to and after the workshop.
Be point of contact with the Directors to confirm there are no calendar clashes, and to sort out things like payment.
Open/close the gym on the day
Be first aider if the guest coach or person running the workshop/event does not hold a first aid training certificate.
Do the BCG welcome and introduce the guest coach.
Know the Code of Conduct and let attendees know they can come to you with any issues.
Gather any feedback and pass that back to the Directors in case there are any issues to be addressed.
Additional work needed to be done by the facilitator (or helper of facilitator) is to:
a) Write up the blurb for a workshop/event (or liaise with guest coach to do that) and
b) Get images so that these can be put on our website within a decent timeframe before the date, and used to promote the event on our socials.
In order to satisfy the BCG insurance details, a member wishing to be a facilitator must be first aid trained. Additionally, in order to satisfy the venue, Brick's insurance/tenancy agreement, a person must have completed their induction and know the health & safety/fire protocols. This induction may be coordinated on the day of the First Aid training and during the induction members will receive an overview of policies, health & safety in the building, the contact details of staff and be shown around. After completing the Brick's induction, members will be able to become a keyholder.
Training is on an ad hoc basis (the previous training was covered by a grant) and although there are currently no plans to run further training, the best place to keep up-to-date into calls for facilitators would be Loomio.
Members who already hold a first aid certificate and who wish to become a facilitator should email mail@bristolcooperativegym.org
